Mr Sultan Dajani, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Council member who recently expressed concern about the handling of pay rises for senior members of the Society's staff (PJ, July 22, p118), is now querying the status of a remuneration body mentioned in the Society's response to his concerns.
In a press statement published on August 1, Mr Dajani says that "this brand new and mysterious committee" has not been ratified by the Council. He asks who set it up, who serves on it, what its remit is and why it is needed if nothing is wrong with the directors' salary review.
Commenting on the Society's statement that staff salary bands are published in the Society's annual report, Mr Dajani claims that the banding system can mask large individual rises. Moreover, he says, the fact that current salary bands will not be published until next year does nothing to alleviate members' concerns about this year's figures.
Mr Dajani believes that, as a Council member, he has the right to full access to records and documentation, "especially when members' concerns have been raised and publicly expressed".
Mr Dajani says that he had been forced to go public after exhausting all discreet and official channels. He concludes: "I urge the President to save us further embarrassment and to answer my questions in confidence without further impedance or I will be forced to follow other recourse of action and further publicity."
