A European Commission advisory scientific committee on cosmetics has issued a paper for consultation on the safety of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) in skin care products. Among issues discussed in the paper are the effects of AHAs on the skin's responses to UV exposure. Use of products containing AHAs may cause susceptibility to increased damage from UV. The committee recommends that there should be warnings for consumers to avoid and/or protect skin from UV light while using such products.
Comments on the paper will be discussed after September 15.
