SIR,-It has been a most interesting year and while not exactly "The Night of the Long Knives" seems to be the Night of the Long Spatulas. Distinguished members have been eliminated from positions of trust all in the name of democracy.
You depart on September 1 and the the Officers (whoever they are) are to set up a small task force to examine the post of editor of the PJ before the Society appoints a successor (PJ, August 12, p229). Presumably the post is going to be altered and possibly downgraded, or why examine the post of editor if it is not going to be changed?
The reports use the terms early retirement and resignation and rumours will abound.
It will be interesting to see whether the assurances of the Council in this matter will amount to anything.
