From Dr B. P. Curwain, MRPharmS
SIR,-For the record, as a self-employed locum until October, 1999, I was charging 45p per mile. There were no complaints. When I became a part-time National Health Service employee in April, 1999, I discovered that the mileage rate payable for one's own car, over 1600cc was, and remains, 49.3p per mile. Under 1600cc it is just over 30p per mile. Obviously as an employee one is not paid for the normal journey to the workplace.
This puts the Moss rate of 25p excluding the first 10 miles to and from home into context. It certainly discouraged me from working for them except very close to home.
