Hydromorphone record-keeping

An occasional feature, prepared in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Professional Standards Directorate, to highlight problems and inquiries currently being handled

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Professional Standards Directorate has been receiving an increasing number of queries from pharmacists concerning the recording of receipts and supplies of hydromorphone (Palladone) in the Controlled Drug register.
Because hydromorphone is a Schedule 2 Controlled Drug, all receipts and supplies must be recorded in a hydromorphone section of the CD register. If there is no suitably headed section in the register, pharmacists should use a blank section as appropriate.
Under no circumstances should hydromorphone be recorded in the morphine section of the register. It is essential that it is entered in its own section.
