The 2000 meeting of the British Pharmaceutical Conference is to be held in Birmingham from September 10 to 13. We publish here our final update on the conference programme, with other conference news and a summary of the programme of meetings and official social events
The number of persons registering to attend the British Pharmaceutical Conference has hit a record this year. As of September 5 - with some late bookings still expected - the total number of registrations had reached 1,300. And the numbers will be swelled further on the Sunday, when all conference sessions will be free to those attending the Pharmacy Live exhibition and to any others who wish to turn up and register on the day. E-commerce for breakfast
Community pharmacists attending the British Pharmaceutical Conference still have a chance to register for a breakfast session on electronic commerce, hosted by a Birmingham-based radio personality. The session, entitled "Breakfast with Doolan: e.pharmacy.com(munity)", takes the form of an interactive debate hosted by Mr Ed Doolan, who presents a six-day-a-week political and current affairs programme on BBC Radio WM. It has been organised by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Community Pharmacists Group.

The subjects to be discussed in the annual "hot topics" sessions at the British Pharmaceutical Conference have now been agreed. Although a provisional list of topics is drawn up early in the organisation of the conference, the programme is not finalised until the last minute in case any important new topics arise.
The hot topics are to be debated in two sets of five parallel sessions on Tuesday, September 12. The first set, from 2.30 to 3.30pm, will look at "Therapeutic cloning", "Use of generics", "Pharmacists and sexual health", "The expert patient group" and "Pharmacy on-line". The second set, from 4 to 5pm, will consider "Genetically modified products", "The pharmacist's role in primary care trusts", "Over-the-counter medicines in pharmacies", "Smoking cessation guidelines" and "Teaching: fit for purpose".
