Next year's British Pharmaceutical Conference, the 138th, will be held at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre from Sunday, September 23, to Wednesday, September 26. The theme of the conference, "Global pharmacy: science in the service of patients", is intended to highlight the international scope of pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences, and will focus on several areas of international concern that represent major challenges to global health. These are: infectious disease, cardiovascular disease (particularly the prevention and treatment of coronary heart disease) and cancer (addressing advances in pharmacological interventions and helping patients to live with cancer).
Presentations at the conference will focus on innovations and developments in fundamental and applied sciences, professional responses to these challenges, and national and international programmes of health care strategies aimed at the treatment of these major diseases.
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society says: "The theme of the conference reflects the fact that we are facing major challenges in improving the health of the global population. Changes in the epidemiology of tuberculosis infection provide an example of a public health challenge that affects both developed and developing countries. Therefore, it is timely to consider the contributions of the pharmaceutical sciences, health care professionals, health service delivery and the pharmaceutical industry to improving global health care."
The conference will comprise full professional and scientific programmes together with symposia, poster sessions and an integrated exhibition and science fair. Glasgow, a former European City of Culture and the 1999 City of Architecture, has good communications to major cities in the United Kingdom and mainland Europe.
