An association that aims to set standards for locum agencies and locums was
launched at the British Pharmaceutical Conference on September 11.
Standards are needed, according to the association, because there are currently
no controls over locum agencies, especially with regard to the quality of locums
and
attendance. In addition, the current shortage of pharmacists means that employers
are having to rely more on locums. The public is also demanding greater accountability
from health professionals.
Intending Association of Locum Pharmacist Agencies (ALPhA) members will have
to advertise their intent to join in The Pharmaceutical Journal, will have to
be able to prove that they have adequate administration systems for running
an agency and will be expected to provide both financial and character references.
In return, they will receive support from ALPhA and will be able to use the
associations logo on their stationery.
