The Council

Insulting the membership

From Mr S. I. Dajani, MRPharmS

SIR,—Since the number of Council meetings has been reduced under the new ways of working, debating time has become a scant resource. Thus I did not want to waste valuable time discussing straightforward managerial issues instead of important strategical and political matters. Now I feel that I have no alternative but to refer matters to the Council, especially as the open letter from the President raised even more questions (PJ, August 26, p292). I hope that the membership will understand my reasons for referring this matter to the Council. Had I been given the answers I requested in confidence at the start, then that would have been the end of the matter. I would dearly like to draw a line under this sordid episode.
I empathise totally with Mr Engineer’s views about the lack of Council members at the stand at Chemex (PJ, September 16, p394). In previous years, Council members have been present on the stand even though their presence was voluntary. This year, Council members were told that no expenses would be paid, owing to the deficit. I saw this as a final insult to the membership.
