Museum helps pharmacies win prizes

T op prizes have been given to two pharmacies for their contributions to local civic events — in both cases with the help of historical material supplied by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s museum.

The G. R. & P. C. Macbride Pharmacy in West Calder, Midlothian, took part in the West Calder millennium civic week from August 20 to 26 and was awarded a cup for the best dressed premises. The pharmacy made use of the two travelling showcases available on loan from the Society’s museum (see p479). The window displays also included antiques owned by proprietors Graeme and Carole Macbride or loaned by other staff and customers. One exhibit was a jar of live leeches borrowed from St John’s hospital, Livingston.
The other winner was Finlay McKinlay Chemists, of Glossop, Derbyshire, which took part in the town’s 22nd annual Victorian weekend, from September 1 to 3. Shops entered competitions for window displays and for the Victorian dress worn by staff. The pharmacy won the “best overall” prize (which recognises both costume and windows) and the founder’s cup. The window display included copies of advertisements supplied by the Society’s museum.
