Locums

Take a firm line

From Mr J. Wilson, MRPharmS

SIR,—May I comment on the letter from Mrs O’Neill (PJ, September 23, p445) on the behaviour of some locum pharmacists. Is it not time that the Society, perhaps through its inspectorate, took a firm line with those of our colleagues who are letting the side down? The proprietor of a scruffy, unprofessional, even dangerous pharmacy, where dispensing errors were common, would soon find himself receiving the attentions of the Society, so why not an unprofessional locum?
As an occasional locum pharmacist myself, I feel it is incumbent upon me to act as though the pharmacy in which I am working, even if only for a single morning, is my own business, and operate accordingly. I also try to operate in a manner befitting a professional person. If this sounds pompous, then so be it; I am certainly not embarrassed to state my point of view. If the Society cannot or will not act, then let us hope that the newly formed Association of Locum Pharmacy Agencies can do something.
