The Society

Manning the Society's Chemex stand

From Mr N. J. M. Engineer

SIR,—I refer to my letter published in The Journal of September 16 (p394). I understand that a memo dated September 1 was sent to Council members by the Secretary and Registrar, Miss Ann Lewis, which stated that Council members who attended Chemex did so on a voluntary basis and that those who attended and were invited to help man the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s stand would not be able to claim expenses. It is clear from this memo that the Society is trying to save money and that it thinks that Chemex is an unimportant venue and therefore does not warrant Council members manning the stand.
I would like to point out that Chemex is one of the few venues where a large number of pharmacists attend, and therefore it is important that future exhibitions are manned properly.
Finally, I find it amazing that the Society cannot afford to pay expenses to Council members to attend Chemex but at the same time it can buy a flat for some £500,000 for the use of the President.
