Labelling prosecution

A Leicestershire-based food supplement company, Lifeplan Products Ltd, has been fined £1,500 under the Food Safety Act 1990 for mislabelling pots of calcium and vitamin C tablets.
The company pleaded guilty to the offence at Market Harborough magistrates’ court recently. Trading standards officers had analysed the contents of a tub of the tablets and found that the tablets contained 118mg of calcium, rather than the claimed 162mg.
In its defence, the company said that it had been expanding rapidly and that its quality control had not been as good as it should have been. Three nutritional biochemists had now been appointed and new quality controls introduced.
Lifeplan was also ordered to pay £961 costs.
