Lloyds refurbishes heritage branch

Lloyds Pharmacy recently refurbished one of the oldest pharmacies in its chain. The building at 56 Abbeygate Street, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, has been home to a pharmacy since 1789 when the business of Mr Woolfrey Middleditch moved there (PJ, February 21, 1998, p256). It was acquired by Savory & Moore in 1971 and later became part of the former Lloyds Chemists chain.
The refurbished pharmacy features an open plan dispensing area, consulting rooms for use by pharmacy staff and a chiropodist, and an enlarged beauty and perfumery area.
During the refurbishment a good luck stone was discovered buried in a doorway and this is now on display in the pharmacy (pictured above).
