Rapid influenza test available soon

A test that allows rapid diagnosis of influenza will be available to both health professionals and the public later this month.
The Quickvue Influenza Test can detect influenza types A and B within 10 minutes. Patients perform a nasal swab, which they then dip into a test tube of chemical reagents. A dipstick is then inserted into the reagents and, if the test is positive (ie, the person has influenza), it turns pink or red.
The manufacturer, Quidel Corporation, says that rapid diagnosis will help to prevent the spread of influenza, as people will know when to stay at home. It also says that the test will help prevent unnecessary use of antibiotics and will allow prompt treatment with antiviral medicines when a diagnosis of influenza is confirmed. Quidel says that the product will be launched at the end of November and pharmacists wishing to find out more about the test or to order stock should contact the company, tel 01844 278400.
