The World Health Organisation has suggested that .health should become a top level internet domain (TLD) in the same way as .com and .org. The WHO is one of a number of organisations that had suggested new TLDs to be considered by the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) over the past week. If the proposal is approved, the WHO will become responsible for setting policy on how the .health TLD is distributed and used. The organisation intends that the .health TLD would only be permitted for websites that adhere to specified quality and ethical standards to be agreed following international consultation with governments, medical associations, consumer groups and the health industry, among others. Dr Joan Dzenowagis, who formulated the WHO proposal, said on November 13: "We want, and need, to raise the standard of information about health that gets placed on the internet and to improve people's trust in it."
