Stroke risk with smoking cessation drug

Reports in the media this week have indicated that amfebutamone (bupropion, Zyban) might cause stroke. There have been seven cases of stroke reported via the yellow card scheme from a total of 1,342 notifications of adverse effects for the drug.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Health told The Journal on November 20: "This is a small number considering the increased risk of stroke among smokers."
