Balham, Tooting and Wandsworth primary care group in South London is to receive £900,100 from the National Lottery's new opportunities fund for a healthy living initiative which will include the provision of smoking cessation advice and support from community pharmacies.
Smoking cessation is one of six projects in the Tooting health living initiative, in which the area's local pharmaceutical committee is a partner. Other projects include working with the Tooting NHS walk-in centre on health improvement among ethnic minorities, rewarding restaurants for serving low-fat and low-salt items, and organising walks on the local common.
Last year, the new opportunities fund allocated £300m to develop healthy living centres. Of this, £16.6m has been awarded to specific projects, including the Tooting healthy living initiative.
