A man of quiet disposition, he received the respect and affection of colleagues and fellow pharmacists alike. He steered the hospital pharmacy service in East Cumberland through the difficult period leading up to the Noel Hall reforms of the early 1970s and was able to lay the foundations for an efficient and effective service in Cumbria.

He traded in community pharmacy for over 50 years until the business was sold in 1991. There is still a corner of Meir known locally as Duncan Ross corner.
His interests included Rotary, scouting, gardening and golf, and he was president of the local branch of the Pharmaceutical Society on two separate occasions.
