Six pharmacists have been designated as fellows of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society by the Society's panel of fellows. They are Dr Linda Anderson, Mr Yaakov Cass, Mrs Brenda Charlton, Mr Malcolm Goldie, Mrs Madeleine Keyworth and Mr Tony Nunn. The following biographical information has been provided by the panel of fellows to assist in identifying the pharmacists concerned. It does not necessarily represent the reasons for designation as fellows.
Dr Linda Anderson, FRPharmS, who registered in 1980, has worked for the Medicines Control Agency since 1987 and has been principal pharmaceutical assessor to the chemistry, pharmacy and standards subcommittee of the Committee on Safety of Medicines for the past 11 year. She was appointed an expert pharmaceutical assessor in 1999. In 1995 she was appointed United Kingdom delegate to the quality working party of the European Community's Committee for Proprietary Medicinal Products. She was also appointed UK delegate to the ad-hoc working party on herbal medicinal products of the European Medicines Evaluation Agency. She has been a member of the British Pharmacopoeia advisory committee on crude drugs and galenicals since 1990 and its vice-chairman since 1998. She is co-author of ‘Herbal medicines: a guide for the health care professional', published by the Pharmaceutical Press in 1996.
Mr Yaakov Cass, FRPharmS, who registered in 1975, is employed by the Israel ministry of health as its regional pharmaceutical officer for the central region. As such he represents the executive arm of the pharmaceutical administration and is responsible for the implementation of the pharmacy regulations in his region. His responsibilities include extending professional training to the pharmacists in the region, approving the appointment of responsible pharmacists, authorising clearance of medicinal products and handling complaints from the public.
Mrs Brenda Charlton, FRPharmS, who registered in 1963, has been a relief pharmacist and manager in both hospital and community pharmacy since selling her community pharmacy business in 1988. On moving to the Isle of Man in 1978, she was largely responsible for setting up the local branch of the Society. She was elected branch secretary at its inaugural meeting and continued in the post for nine years. Mrs Charlton has served on various committees, including the Isle of Man pharmaceutical list committee (which deals with matters such as relocation of pharmacies and new contracts) and the joint services committee. She has also acted as a representative for locum pharmacists on the Manx Chemists Association.
Mr Malcolm Goldie, FRPharmS, is a community pharmacist who registered in 1961. After graduating he joined a pharmaceuticals company and was appointed to its large suburban pharmacy in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. He then acquired his own business in Sunderland and for the next 25 years provided a diligent and caring pharmacy service for the under-privileged in the area where he chose to practise. In 1990 he was appointed secretary of the Northern region of the National Pharmaceutical Association and in 1991 he became a board member of Norchem Ltd. He is currently secretary of two local pharmaceutical committee in developing new pharmaceutical services with a health action zone and the primary care groups/trusts. In 1993 he was admitted to membership of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries, London.
Mrs Madeleine Keyworth, FRPharmS, is a community pharmacist who registered in 1966. Since South Humber health authority was formed in 1996 she has held the posts of non-executive director and vice-chairman, and has been chairman since April. She is an active member of the North Lincolnshire primary care group, representing the health authority. She has been committee member, secretary and chairman of her local branch of the Society. She is a tutor for the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education.
Mr Tony Nunn, FRPharmS, who registered in 1971, has been director of pharmacy for the Royal Liverpool Children's NHS trust, Liverpool, since 1991. Since 1994, he has been UK clinical pharmacy panel member for First Databank, of San Bruno, California, a provider of drug, medical and nutrition information. He has been paediatric pharmacy adviser to the British National Formulary since 1996. He has been associate editor (international) for the Journal of Paediatric Pharmacy Practice since 1996 and pharmaceutical consultant to IDIS World Medicines since 1998.
