Thioridazine new indication

The licensed indications for thioridazine have been amended. Thioridazine is now indicated only as second line treatment of schizophrenic illness in adults (see p877). The Committee on Safety of Medicines (CSM) says that new warnings and precautions for safe use have been added to the summary of product characteristics. Drugs which inhibit or are metabolised by cytochrome P450 2D6 have the potential to increase plasma levels of thioridazine and thus its cardiotoxicity. Thioridazine is contra- indicated in patients taking such agents. Drugs which prolong the QTc interval may cause additive cardiotoxic effects if taken concurrently with thioridazine and are contraindicated (see SPC). Thioridazine is also contraindicated in patients with clinically significant cardiac disorders, including dysrhythmias, conduction disorders or a history of QTc prolongation. All patients should have baseline ECG screening which should should be repeated after each dose escalation and at six-monthly intervals. See SPC for further details.
