Price On November 23, Professor Mike Price, of the school of pharmaceutical sciences, University of Nottingham, after a year-long illness with cancer.
Professor MARTYN DAVIES (head of the school) writes: Professor Mike Price was a long-standing member of the school. He was a graduate in chemistry from the University of Nottingham in 1969 and stayed at Nottingham to obtain a PhD in cancer research, which was completed in 1972. He was awarded a DSc by the university in 1996. At the time of his death, Professor Price was the CRC reader in pharmaceutical sciences in the cancer research laboratories of the school. However, with over 260 published scientific papers, reviews and book chapters to his credit, his promotion to professorial status was inevitable. Sadly, he died just days before that recognition came, as he was promoted to a chair posthumously in November 29.
The focus of Professor Price's research was to establish proof of principle that antibody-based strategies have a viable role in the treatment and management of human malignant disease. By the 1980s it was evident that much of what had been developed with relatively crude antisera could be applied to murine monoclonal antibodies, providing exciting opportunities to identify and characterise tumour-associated molecules. Professor Price was one of the pioneering researchers in this area and was best known for his work on one of the major families and antigenic markers, the high molecular weight glycoproteins known as mucins. He supervised a large body of researchers over many years, the group being known as the "Mucineers". His latter work focused on the intravesicular administration of radiolabelled antibodies in patients with bladder cancer, demonstrating that sufficient radioactivity could accumulate for therapeutic benefit. The first formal phase I clinical trial of one of Professor Price's novel agents is due to begin in Nottingham in late 2000. He was also working on the systemic administration of radiolabelled antibodies as a means of revealing distant metastases by external imaging procedures for diagnostic studies as well as for staging disease.
Professor Price was an excellent educator, inspiring many generations of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He was also an energetic collaborator, bringing together diverse academic and industrial partners to great effect. In addition, he was active in national and international roles. For example, in 1977, he was elected secretary general of the European Association for Cancer Research, serving for a period of 21 years, and in 1997 he was elected secretary general of the Federation of European Cancer Societies. He will be greatly missed at Nottingham by so many who knew him as a colleague, and collaborator and friend.
