OFFICIAL NOTICES

Alterations to the Byelaws: Registration examination

NOTICE is hereby given in accordance with Section XXVIII of the Byelaws that the Council of the Society has approved proposals to alter the Byelaws concerning the registrar and registrations (Section XX) as hereunder and that it intends to make such alterations after the expiry of 60 days from the date of this notice, subject to such amendments as the Lords of the Privy Council may require.
SECTION XX
Paragraph 29 Delete and substitute the following words: (a) A person who commenced preregistration training prior to June, 2001, and who fails the registration examination at the third attempt will not normally be eligible for registration as a pharmaceutical chemist. In circumstances considered by the Council to be exceptional, the Council may specify conditions under which it is prepared to permit a preregistration trainee to sit the examination on one further occasion provided that the third attempt is made at or before the summer, 2005, examination.
(b) A person who commences preregistration training from June, 2001, onwards and who fails the registration examination at the third attempt will not be eligible for registration as a pharmaceutical chemist.
(c) Regulations for the registration examination will provide for circumstances under which:
(i) candidates may withdraw from an examination sitting for which they have been entered
(ii)candidates who sit the examination and have illness or some other difficulty that they believe has affected their performance may request of the relevant Board of Examiners that this be taken into account in the awarding of results
(iii)candidates who sit the examination and have illness or some other difficulty that they believe has seriously affected their performance may ask the relevant Board of Examiners that they be deemed not to have made an attempt on that occasion. If the request is granted by the Board of Examiners, the Board will not consider the candidate’s paper or marks and his/her subsequent attempt will carry the same conditions of entry as the attempt not counted.

ANN LEWIS
Secretary and Registrar
Note: The effect of the Byelaw amendment is to remove from the Byelaws the ability of the Council, in exceptional circumstances, to permit a fourth attempt at the registration examination. This is in line with current academic practice. Students sitting the examination for a third time will be advised to ensure they are fit and ready to do so. Examination rules will provide for circumstances in which candidates may apply to have an attempt at the examination set aside.
