Statutory Committee
The Statutory Committee will meet at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great
Britain, 1 Lambeth High Street, London SE1 7JN, on Monday, January 15, 2001,
at 10am, to hear (1) an inquiry into the case of a pharmacist convicted of offences
un- der the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 for failure to keep proper records; and
(2) an inquiry into the case of a pharmacist convicted of theft. The Committee
will also hear (3) an inquiry into a the case of a pharmacist convicted of driving
while under the influence of alcohol. There is in addition a complaint by the
Council which alleges that the pharmacist’s inability to discharge his professional
duties while engaged as a locum amounts to misconduct.
The Statutory Committee will further meet on Tuesday, January 16, 2001
at 10am, to hear (4) an inquiry into a complaint by the Council of the Society
against a pharmacist which includes allegations that permitting the pharmacy
to remain open without a pharmacist in personal control resulting in the pharmacist’s
conviction on two counts of unsupervised sales of pharmacy only medicines and
the storage of patient returned medicines in the dispensary where they could
have been used for dispensing amount to misconduct. The Committee will also
hear (5) an inquiry into a complaint by the Council of the Society against a
pharmacist which alleges that the authorisation and submission of a claim for
locum payment by the pharmacist in the name of the pharmacist’s spouse for a
day not worked by the spouse amounts to misconduct.
The Statutory Committee will further meet on Wednesday, January 17, 2001,
at 2pm, to hear (6) an application for restoration from a person whose name
has been removed from the Register.
The Statutory Committee will further meet on Thursday, January 18, 2001,
at 2pm, to hear (7) an inquiry into the case of an applicant seeking registration
with the Society convicted of an offence contrary to S64 of the Medicines Act
1968.

Validation
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society is holding a two-and-a-half day residential
course on “Analytical validation and regulatory issues in the pharmaceutical
industry” at the Hilton hotel, York, on February 14-16.
The course will cover the specification of current validation requirements (both
technical and regulatory), validation of computer aided analytical and bioanalytical
procedures, technology for analytical method design and validation, requirements
of good laboratory practice, effective design of analytical protocols for quality
control and pharmaceutical development (including formulation development),
implications for laboratory information management systems, international developments
in validation requirements, and preparing for regulatory inspections. The course
will consist of tutorials and workshops
The cost, inclusive of two nights bed and breakfast, lunch and evening meal,
refreshments and course documentation, is £1,186.75 for pharmacists or
members of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Scientists and £1,233.75 for

Sainsbury’s winner Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd has awarded its Pharmacy
of the Year 2000 award to its branch at Arnold, Nottingham. The award was open
to all in-store branches and involved assessments by pharmacy operations managers
and mystery shoppers. The branch received a cheque for £500.

Mrs Sharon Pfleger, MRPharmS, has been appointed to a new position
of consultant in pharmaceutical public health jointly between the Highland and
the Western Isles health boards. Mrs Pfleger will be based at the Highland health
board in Inverness and will work in the Western Isles two days per month. She
is currently public health adviser at North Nottinghamshire health authority
and will take up her new post in March.
Mr John Hart recently retired as chief executive of Pharmacy Mutual Insurance
Ltd after nearly 42 years’ service with the company.
