Chamings In a tribute to the late Arthur Robert George Chamings (PJ, December 16, 2000, p888), Mr JOHN SHINNER writes: I should like to pay tribute to Arthur Chamings’s enthusiasm and support of the British Pharmaceutical Students Association, particularly in its earliest years.

It was my good fortune to be the first president of the association, and when Arthur was general manager of Ciba Laboratories and I was a student at the “Square”, he often invited me to lunch in London on Saturdays. This led to Ciba being the first sponsor of the BPSA, which proved crucial for the fledgling organisation. Arthur must have been delighted to see it prosper and celebrate its 50th anniversary a few years ago.

Arthur was a frequent and erudite contributor to the PJ; his letters were a joy to read.

Gately In a tribute to the late Francis Gately (PJ, January 13, p50), Mr VICTOR HAMMOND writes: Frank Gately was one of the survivors from over 60 wartime colleague/comrades who served with the Royal Arny Medical Corps and who sailed to India on HMT Ormonde in January, 1941. After the crew had spent nine days on board, the ship left Glasgow on January 11. There were four days on board in Freetown followed by five days’ shore leave in Durban, and the voyage ended in Bombay at 10am on March 4.

The accuracy of these dates is due to a detailed diary that Frank kept during those hazardous days. He gladly presented it to me knowing that, after extracting information, I would send it in 1995 to the RAMC museum (now the Army Medical Services Museums, Keogh Barracks, Ash Vale, Aldershot) where it should now be together with the service records of the late Bernard Clarke. Bernard was another of the “Ormondites” and it was under Captain Clarke that Frank served as a sergeant-major with 9 Indian Depot Medical Stores in Imphal, Manipur, from February, 1942, to June, 1943, at the time of the Japanese encirclement of that area.

In September, 1942, Frank was promoted in the same unit to lieutenant (QM), the rank that he held at the end of the 1939-45 war, and he remained with 9 IMDS until his repatriation in 1945.

My only contact with Frank was by correspondence, something into which he plunged with great interest. His letters conveyed his deeply religious convictions and his attention to detail. He had been suffering from some form of carcinoma, which only became known to me two years ago when he mentioned it briefly in one of his letters. I am grateful for having come across his friendly aid in my wartime researches.

Kirk On December 28, 2000, William Francis Kirk, MRPharmS, of 1 The Widon, Loughborough, Leicestershire LE11 3PE. Mr Kirk registered in 1942.

Dr IAN TANSEY writes: Bill Kirk was one of the founders of the technology of metered dose aerosols. He joined Riker Laboratories (now 3M) in 1956, and there he became the United Kingdom expert in the brand new field of metered dose inhalers (MDIs), which had recently been invented by Riker in the United States.

Making a few aerosols was not too difficult but making millions was a challenge, which Bill was instrumental in meeting with new technologies, many of which are still in use today. He spent the remainder of his career in the development of MDIs and was widely respected internationally for his knowledge and enthusiasm for this innovative dosage form. He laid some of the foundations for what is now universally recognised as one of the major advances in drug delivery since the 1939-45 war.
