`Guidance on OTC sales of emergency hormonal contraception

Supplies of Levonelle licensed as a pharmacy medicine are now widely available. Pharmacists are reminded that they must comply with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s mandatory professional standards when supplying emergency hormonal contraception over the counter. In addition the Society has issued practice guidance to help pharmacists ensure that an OTC sale is appropriate.

The professional standards and practice guidance were published in The Pharmaceutical Journal of December 16, 2000 (pp890-92). In addition, a distance learning pack, prepared jointly by the four United Kingdom centres for pharmacy postgraduate education was distributed with The Journal of January 20 (see p101).
