Coultas
On January 6, Benjamin Whitham Coultas, MRPharmS, of 28 Lester Close,
Higher Compton, Plymouth, Devon PL3 6PX. Mr Coultas registered in 1940.
Mr MERVYN MADGE writes: The Plymouth branch of the Royal Pharmaceutical
Society mourns the passing of Benjamin Coultas, one of its oldest and
most respected members. He was a hospital pharmacist and for many years
chief pharmacist, during which time he saw the development of the Plymouth
hospital. He was always willing to help his colleagues in community pharmacy.
He did not aspire to any branch office but always gladly gave his support
and interest. He was a worthy pharmacist and a true gentleman in all senses
of the word.

Cross On January 5, Eric
Arthur Cross, FRPharmS, of 27 Rydes Avenue, Worplesdon, Guildford, Surrey
GU2 6SR. Mr Cross registered in 1938.
Mr Cross spent most of his pharmaceutical career at St Helier hospital
in Carshalton, Surrey, starting in 1947 as a basic grade pharmacist and
rising to group chief pharmacist in 1960, a post he held for 12 years.
Upon the reorganisation of pharmaceutical services in 1972, he attained
the post of regional pharmacist for the then South West Metropolitan regional
hospital board and subsequently became the regional pharmaceutical officer
for the South West Thames regional health authority upon the reorganisation
of the health service in 1974. He retired from the National Health Service
in 1980 and spent some time as chief pharmacist at Al Qassmi hospital,
Sharjah, in the United Arab Emirates. Upon his return home, he was pharmaceutical
consultant to Charnwood Pharmaceuticals.
During his career, he developed distribution systems which included the
preparation of ward storage packs and the provision of regular advice
to hospitals without on-site pharmacists. He was also instrumental in
establishing what became the regional drug contract and the regional quality
control service. He played a significant role in the evaluation and subsequent
restriction of manufacturing activities which were expanding indiscriminately
in the 1960s, and was instrumental in setting up an inquiry into the costs
of manufacture within hospitals.
His innovative work in these areas resulted in him being asked to join
various advisory committees of the then Department of Health and Social
Security, including the Hospital Pharmacists Consultative Committee. He
was secretary and subsequently chairman of the regional pharmaceutical
officers’ group advising the Department on hospital and community pharmacy
services.
