Meetings to help shape future of Society’s local network
New administrative arrangements for CPA

Meetings to help shape future of Society’s local network

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society has begun a series of regional meetings to explore how its local network of branches and regions can meet the challenges of the future. The first meeting was due to take place on February 7 in the Society’s Wessex region. Further meetings are scheduled to take place throughout the remaining English regions and in Wales during the first half of 2001.

The purpose of the meetings is to address issues such as

  • How should branches and regions relate to other pharmacy organisations, including pharmacy development groups?
  • How can the Society serve as an inclusive umbrella body for pharmacy at local level?
  • How can the Society get the best value from the funds it deploys on the local membership network?

The meetings are being organised by regional secretaries and the Welsh Executive secretariat. Members of Council and staff from the Society’s membership team are attending the meetings.

A resource pack has been prepared to help the discussion on how the Society’s regions and branches can support the future of pharmacy. Included in the resource pack — and intended to form the foundations of how the Society at the local level can contribute to the future development of pharmacy — is the report of a focus group meeting held at the Society’s London headquarters in August, 2000. Involving members from all over Britain, the focus group aimed to capture wide ranging views about what the branches and regions could be doing and how they should operate to serve the needs of the profession in the future.

Setting up such a group had been one of the early priorities of the Society’s membership team established in May last year.

The Society’s Scottish Department is carrying out its own review of local organisation in Scotland and has arranged a meeting on February 20.

New administrative arrangements for CPA

New administrative arrangements have been introduced for the Commonwealth Pharmaceutical Association, which has been managed by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society since its foundation in 1970.

With effect from February 1, Professor Tony Moffat (the Society’s chief scientist) has taken over the role of secretary and treasurer of the CPA from Mr Philip Green (the Society’s deputy secretary). Mrs Betty Falconbridge has been appointed administrator of the association.

Membership of the CPA is open to any society or association representative of all pharmacists in a Commonwealth country. There is also a personal membership category open to any individual pharmacist who is eligible to practice in a Commonwealth country. The fee for personal members is £10 a calendar year.

All inquiries about the association should be addressed to
