Coultas In a tribute to the late Benjamin Whitham Coultas (PJ, February 3, p145), Mr KEN WADGE writes: Benjamin registered in 1940 and came to Plymouth from Yorkshire where he had trained at Leeds infirmary. He started at the Royal Naval hospital in Plymouth before moving to Greenbank hospital. During the 1939–45 war, he worked principally at Fleet, some miles to the east of Plymouth, and was largely responsible for maintaining essential hospital supplies for a large area. I had known Ben for about 56 years and valued him as a friend, a gentleman and a highly professional pharmacist. He was always ready to help any colleague with advice and urgent medical supplies.

After the war he was appointed group chief pharmacist for the Plymouth area and had responsibility for six hospitals: four in Plymouth, one in Liskeard and one in Launceston.

Before he retired in 1962 he was very much involved in the planning of the new district hospital at Derriford, which replaced four hospitals in the Plymouth area. Ben was largely responsible for the design of the pharmacy department in that hospital, which employs some 25 or more staff. He worked hard and was always ready for any emergency. He was a perfectionist and meticulous but also a very human man. Sadly his wife Sibyl died in 1992 after a long illness, during which Ben had to bring up two young daughters largely on his own, in addition to his heavy professional responsibilities.

He kept in touch with many of his staff and took a keen interest in their lives, which they appreciated. I and many of his colleagues in this area will miss him very much.

Holder In a tribute to the late Eldred John Holder (PJ, February 10, p182), Mrs THELMA McNICOL (née Sawyer) writes: I was a student at "the Square" during 1930–31 and I was very fortunate to have had Eldred as my pharmacy demonstrator. I was, therefore, very sad to read the news of his death and I would like to convey my heartfelt sympathy to his wife and family in their great loss.

I think I could be his oldest student; I am now 91 years old. He was kindness itself to me and a very good tutor.
