Boots launches CPD programme

Boots the Chemists has launched a continuing professional development (CPD) programme for its pharmacists.

The company says that the programme, called B, provides a support tool for lifelong learning for all pharmacists in the company. It will help them identify and prioritise their development needs, select and implement development activities and support their career at any stage. B has been developed with the College of Pharmacy Practice.

Currently, B comprises four modules, although Boots says that further modules will be added including one on the structure of the National Health Service and one on Controlled Drugs. The first module of B is designed to develop an understanding of CPD and is accredited by the CPP. The other three modules currently available are diagnostic (helping pharmacists to identify and prioritise their development needs), managing your career, and basics (a reference source aimed at newly qualified and support pharmacists). The B folder also contains CPD record sheets.

The uptake of modules is to be monitored through feedback and a database of certificates issued following successful completion of modules. Boots says that although it will be possible to identify staff who are not using the CPD scheme, it is not to become a contractual requirement.

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society's model of a CPD cycle was set out in a recent supplement to The Journal (PJ, February 17, p220). It is similar to the CPD cycle in B. The supplement states that, in the future, it is expected that pharmacists will be required to submit CPD documentation to the Society every two to three years.
