Phoenix aims to go national with bid for Tatfords

Phoenix Pharmahandel AG has made an agreed offer to acquire the Portsmouth-based regional wholesaler Graham Tatford & Co Ltd (Tatfords) for an undisclosed sum. If successful, the move would give Phoenix’s United Kingdom subsidiary, Phoenix Healthcare Distribution Ltd, national coverage with a 12 per cent market share.

Tatfords has a substantial share of the pharmaceutical wholesaling market in South and South West England. It has an annual turnover of £65m. Under the terms of the bid, the management team and staff will remain in place.

Mr Don Mulholland (chairman, Tatfords) said that the company believed that the offer from Phoenix was in the best interests of all concerned, given that pharmaceutical wholesaling in Britain was being consolidated in the hands of three main players.

Mr Sandy Young (chief executive, Phoenix) led negotiations with Tatfords. He said: “This acquisition virtually completes the coverage that Phoenix requires to be considered as a national pharmaceutical distributor. The company is now in a position to offer a service to all contractors in Great Britain and this will greatly enhance Phoenix's overall performance in 2001.”

Phoenix Pharmahandel is the largest pharmaceutical wholesaler in Germany.
