The Society

 Law and Ethics Bulletin

An occasional feature, prepared in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Professional Standards Directorate, to highlight problems and inquiries currently being handled

Inadequately labelled lactulose

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society has been informed that there may be lactulose in circulation that is inadequately labelled, in that it does not bear the letter “P” in a rectangle. Pharmacists should ensure their staff are aware that the product is a pharmacy medicine, so that no unsupervised sales take place and no bottles are displayed on self-selection shelves.

The Society understands that the manufacturer has recalled the product from wholesalers but does not intend to withdraw it from pharmacies. Any pharmacist who wishes to return stock to wholesalers may do so, but should bear in mind that wholesalers may not be in a position to replenish stock quickly because of the manufacturer's need to prepare new labels.
