Martin On March 1, Colin Martin, of 1 Top
Farm Close, Holtspur, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire HP9 1JS. Mr Martin
registered in 1971 and retired from the register in 1999.
Mrs FRANCES LEONARD writes:
I first met Colin when I became a student at the Square in
1969, from which he graduated in 1970. Colin completed his preregistration
training with Boots, then became a relief manager for the company in North
London. After leaving Boots, Colin worked at various independent community
pharmacies before buying his own pharmacy at the age of 25.
His professionalism and hard work ensured the early success of his business
and, along with his wife Carol, also a pharmacist, and his two young daughters,
Colin seemed set for a successful family and business life. Unfortunately,
in 1980 Colin developed a brain tumour which, among other life-threatening
effects, resulted in total blindness. In 1981, Carol took over the running
of the business and Colin, despite his blindness, looked after their children.
The business was sold in 1990 and Colin's health gradually deteriorated.
He suffered his first stroke in 1994 and over the next seven years he
suffered further strokes and spent considerable periods in hospital. During
all this he maintained his interest and pride in the profession of pharmacy
(and enjoyed many other pursuits including literature, music, poetry and
crosswords). Colin was an example to all who knew him. He was a man of
great intellect who managed to enjoy his life no matter how limited that
became, and he was very fortunate in having such a loving and supportive
family in his wife and daughters. He will be sadly missed by all those
who knew him.
