Special General Meeting

Why would an SGM cost £20,000?

From Mrs M. D. Benfield, MRPharmS

I would be glad if the Society's Treasurer could explain how it would cost the Royal Pharmaceutical Society £20,000 to hold a special general meeting.

Presumably the meeting will be held at the Society's Lambeth headquarters, so there is no rental cost, although there would be additional lighting and heating to pay for.

Depending on when the meeting is held, there might be unsocial hours payments to the staff on duty, and expenses to be paid to any Council members or Society Officers who attend, which might even run into an overnight stay for some of them.

The notice of the meeting would be in The Pharmaceutical Journal at no additional cost.

What other costs have to be added to these to reach the Treasurer's figure?

Margaret Benfield
Hemel Hempstead, Herfordshire

DAVID ALLEN (Treasurer, Royal Pharmaceutical Society) replies:

The cost will depend on whether the headquarters can accommodate the number of members expected to attend. On previous occasions alternative venues had to be hired.

In order to enable members to attend it is likely that the meeting would be planned for a Sunday as on previous occasions.
