Hesketh On March 4,
John Frederick Hesketh, MRPharmS, of 2 Ledson Grove, Town Green, Aughton,
Ormskirk, Lancashire. Mr Hesketh registered in 1938.
C. VICTOR HAMMOND writes: I was a fellow student
with “Jack” Hesketh at the old Liverpool school of pharmacy,
where both of us were studying for part II of the examinations during
the late “Humph” Jones's 1937–38 session. Our aim was to become
members of the Society along with 10 other students whose hereditary names
began with “H”. All of us achieved this to the best of my knowledge.
Soon after I qualified, I lost touch with what I choose to describe as
the “H Club” when I left the Liverpool area to work in London.
During the 1939–45 war, many of us served in the services and I was fortunate
in being able to meet Jack for a day in late 1944 in Dimapur, Assam. We
talked about going into partnership in pharmacy after the war, if we were
lucky enough to survive. This was prevented when I moved to Hull in 1947.
Jack very soon owned a successful pharmacy, initially
in Maghull, as a partner with another wartime pharmacist colleague, and
later independently in Ormskirk, until he retired. Since he wrote to me
in 1988, giving details of the 12 pharmacists who served with him in 24
Indian Base Depot Medical Store, we corresponded regularly, mainly about
our shared historical, usually happy and amusing experiences.
During the past 10 years we met on a few memorable
occasions and brought out the “magic carpet” of reminiscences.
I shall miss him.
