Leitch
On March 24, David Edwin Leitch, FRPharmS, of Wye View, Glasbury,
Hereford HR3 5NU. Mr Leitch registered in 1954.
Professor BRYAN VEITCH writes:
I was saddened to hear of the death of David Leitch
at the age of 71. David was formerly the chief administrative pharmaceutical
officer/director of pharmaceutical public health for Powys and Dyfed and
in this capacity performed a difficult joint role between the two authorities.
The geographical area covered was large, the authorities often differed
in their approaches to delivering health care and there was also the issue
of cross-border funding of services obtained from Shrewsbury and Hereford.
David had a good eye for detail and I cannot remember ever meeting anyone
who could quote Welsh Health Circulars with numbers so accurately. He
was very supportive to me when I first entered the Welsh Office in 1987
and continued giving that unfailing help right up to his retirement. He
was excellent company outside of official CAPO meetings because he had
so many varied interests, immersing himself deeply in caving, National
Park Ranger services, geology, genealogy and all things pertaining to
the Welsh language and culture, to mention a few. His keen sense of humour
pervaded everything with which he chose to be involved. Typical of him,
he minimised the seriousness of his illness and few among his friends
and acquaintances realised that his condition was terminal.
The profession of pharmacy and many other organisations
will miss his wise counsel, depth of knowledge and understanding. The
funeral was held at St Peter's Church, Glasbury-on-Wye, on March 30. There,
surrounded by the sunlit Brecon Beacons, which he so loved, the most fitting
bilingual tributes were paid to him by former medical colleagues and friends.
The Welsh Assembly was represented by the Chief Pharmaceutical Adviser,
the Welsh Executive of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society by the chairman
and the Welsh Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education by the director
along with other former colleagues and life-long friends from pharmacy.
David was laid to rest right outside the church in Welsh soil. Although
he will be sorely missed, the memories will not fade. I know that my colleagues
in Wales will join me in sending to Sheila his wife and Susan his daughter
our heartfelt sympathy at this sad time.
