Community pharmacy

Undervalued

From Mrs A. Farrelly, MRPharmS

As a locum pharmacist, I am surprised at the different practices being adopted for selling emergency hormonal contraception. In one pharmacy, I was told, “we just sell it if they ask for it, we haven't been told anything”. In another I was told, “we are not selling it as the pharmacist considers the time involved in discussion [he considered at least 10 minutes would be needed] was not covered by the profit on the pill”. Both reactions are understandable in today's difficult commercial circumstances. As I understand it, another pharmacist involved in smoking cessation devotes 45 minutes to the first and 20 minutes to subsequent consultations and receives £20 for the whole. Undervalued! And how!

A. Farrelly
Wallington, Surrey
