Working conditions

No crusade intended

From Mr J. Brocklebank, MRPharmS

I must set the record straight after reading the response (PJ, April 28, p573) to my letter which you published in March (PJ, March 3, p282)

The point in my writing in March was to encourage the membership to write to the working party on continuing professional development and not to start a crusade on working conditions. I was trying to point out that most of us work long hours and do not appreciate a vociferous minority committing us to yet more in the way of workload. It is a pity that our profession does not take a leaf out of the British Medical Association's book. Recent press reports indicate that doctors have no intention of following the General Medical Council's recommendations on further education as it is too much of a burden on an already overstretched profession.

As for the 11-hour shifts, they would not be possible in a business that is very intense. I quite enjoy my steady-paced, four-day week and I am fortunate enough to work for an employer who rewards continuing professional development with pay or equivalent time off.

Jonathan Brocklebank
Stone, Staffordshire
