The Society

Members' e-mail service delay

From Mrs J. Taylor, MRPharmS

In The Journal of September 23, 2000, you ran an article entitled “Society to offer e-mail addresses to all members”. The item closed with the statement that further details were to be announced in the coming weeks. I have not noticed anything more about this, nor can I find anything on Health-Media.net, also mentioned in the piece. Can you give me any further details?

Jean Taylor
Wakefield, West Yorkshire

IAN SHEPHERD (head of the Society’s information management and technology policy unit) replies:

The Society has been working with Health-Media.net over the past months to provide a secure e-mail service for members together with access to a range of useful news and other health related information. Initial tests of the system were inconclusive and to ensure that we avoid any problems being caused to members by the installation of the package, it was decided to conduct a wider trial with up to 20 selected members. This trial is now under way. Once we have collected feedback we shall decide the future of the project and announce our intentions.

It is unfortunate that the testing of the system has taken longer than expected but we would emphasise our requirement not to cause problems to existing computer arrangements by the installation of this service.
