The three new members replace Bill Dawson, Bill Darling and Clare Mackie. Professor Dawson was unsuccessful in the election, Mr Darling chose not to seek re-election and Professor Mackie resigned from the Council before the election. Professor Dawson, who is an independent health care consultant. has lost his seat after three years on the Council, having been co-opted in 1998. The four other unsuccessful candidates were Sarah Cockbill, Vanessa Taylor, Alan Woodcock and Ben Zatland. Out of the 44,277 voting papers issued, 9,395 were returned (915 more than in 2000) and 24 were disallowed as invalid). The percentage of voting papers returned was 21.2, compared with 19.6 per cent in both 2000 and 1999. Reproduced below is the election result sheet, showing the stages in the transfer of votes. |

Society loses director of resourcesThe Royal Pharmaceutical Society is losing the services of its director of resources, Denis Argent, who has been with the Society since 1987. Mr Argent's decision to leave the Society follows that of Sue Sharpe, director of professional standards, who in the summer is to take up the new post of chief executive of the Pharmceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PJ, April 21, p526). As director of resources, Mr Argent has been responsible for a range of support services, including finance, human resources, information technology and property management. Before joining the Society he worked as a consultant and in the charity sector. |
