Fellowship certificates presented

Seventeen pharmacists who became fellows of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society during 2000 were presented with their fellowship certificates at the Society’s annual general meeting on May 16. Sixteen of them had been designated as fellows by the Society’s panel of fellows for distinction in the science, practice or profession of pharmacy (PJ, June 10, 2000, p874, and December 9, 2000, p853). The 17th was Professor Saul Tendler, who had been designated as a fellow by the Council of the Society for his outstanding original contribution to the advancement of pharmaceutical knowledge.

Museum events for 2001

As part of its programme of event for 2001, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s museum is to take part in this year’s local Vauxhall Festival by putting on a “Lambeth Pharmacy History Show” on Saturday, July 14. The museum’s exhibition spaces on four floors of the Society’s headquarters building will be open to visitors from noon to 5pm and the afternoon’s events will include demonstrations and talks, all linked to the festival’s garden theme.

Volunteers will display Victorian dispensing skills, and a “15th century apothecary” will preside in full costume over a range of authentic ingredients and made-up medicines for visitors to handle and smell. A “confectioner” will set up stall beside her. Speakers will include Letta Jones, a regular lecturer at Birkbeck College and the Chelsea Physic Garden, who will talk on the history of medicinal herb gardens.

As last year, the curator, Caroline Reed, and her team are also offering no-need-to-book guided tours of the museum displays during the summer. These take place at 2.30pm on every Thursday until July 26.

In the autumn, the museum is to host an exhibition of works by the artist Michelle Charles, inspired by objects and ideas from the museum collections. The exhibition runs from October 12 to January 4, 2002.

Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the museum’s special events should contact the curator at the museum office (tel 020 7735 9141 ext 354; e-mail museum@rpsgb.org.uk). Further details of the programme and an events leaflet can be obtained from the museum office.

Welsh Executive election: postal delays

Disruption of postal services resulting from industrial action by postal workers continues to delay the return of voting papers for the 2001 Welsh Executive election. It is suggested that members who have not yet voted should post their voting papers as early as possible. Papers received later than noon on June 7 will be invalid. Because the business reply envelope supplied to voters is marked “second class”, members may wish to add a first class stamp to speed delivery.
