Disinfection techniques

Clarification

From Dr S. J. Hiom, MRPharmS

I would like to clarify your report (PJ, May 12, p660) on my presentation on assessing disinfection techniques at the Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists weekend conference. After receiving several queries concerning this article, it is apparent to me that there is some confusion over the reporting of the work.

This study demonstrated that spraying (70%w/v IMS) combined with wiping (70% IPA) showed no significant advantage over wiping alone, although both of these were significantly better than spraying alone. The work also demonstrated that 70%w/v IMS spraying was equally effective after 30s and 2min exposure. Further studies are being carried out to modify this method for in-house validation and training purposes.

This work has been published as an original paper (PJ, August 19, 2000, pp277–8).
