Letters to the Editor

Martindale

Best person

From Mr W. B. Rhodes, FRPharmS

In The Journal of June 23 (pA35), applications are sought from pharmacists for the post of staff editor on ‘Martindale’. How wise, how prudent of the editor to make such a stipulation. I seem to recall that similar wisdom was not used in relatively recent advertisements for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Secretary and Registrar, editor of The Pharmaceutical Journal, director of this and director of that.

If the decision-makers attempt to draw a distinction between the editor of one publication and another I would suggest that this would be a distinction without a difference.

The standard response, of course, would be that we require the best person for the job, and who can argue with that? Congratulations to the editor of ‘Martindale’ for being perceptive enough to realise that he can find the best person within the profession. How inconsistent of the Council to allow him.

Bruce Rhodes
Winchcombe, Gloucestershire
