Patients failed, says cancer charity
Reimbursement procedures mean that new anti-cancer
treatments become available too late for many patients, according to the
Cancer Research Campaign.
Each EU country has its own system for agreeing
pricing and reimbursement for new treatments. In some countries this involves
sending submissions to more than one government department, and may also
include reviews by agencies such as Britains National Institute for Clinical
Excellence.
A four year difference between the fastest and the
slowest means that Greek, Portuguese, Belgian and French patients enduring
far longer delays than those in Sweden, Germany or the United Kingdom.
