P-to-GSL switches proposed
Two non-sedating antihistamines currently restricted
to pharmacy sale are to become general sale list medicines in October
under proposals issued by the Medicines Control Agency.
The Committee on Safety of Medicines has advised
that cetirizine dihydrochloride and loratadine are safe for general sale
for the treatment of perennial rhinitis, seasonal allergic rhinitis and
idiopathic chronic urticaria in adults and children aged 12 years and
over. Packs will be restricted to seven tablets.
Medicines are given a GSL classification if they
can, with reasonable safety, be sold or supplied without the supervision
of a pharmacist.
Comments on the proposals can be sent to Tricia
Griffiths, Room 14-110, MCA, Market Towers, 1 Nine Elms Lane, London SW8
5NQ until August 3.
Other products to be changed from P to GSL are
- 28-tablet packs of aspirin 75mg tablets
- 20-sachet packs of ibuprofen 100mg in 5ml syrup
- 16-tablet packs of ibuprofen lysine tablets
- 10-sachet packs of five per cent unit doses of
liquid paracetamol preparations
- sodium fluoride mouthwashes up to 0.05 per cent
for daily use and 0.2 per cent for occasional use
