Scottish model schemes win awards

Two of Scotland’s model schemes for delivering pharmaceutical care in the community have been recognised at the Pharmaceutical Care Awards 2000.

The winning group in the community care section, led by Andrew Radley of Tayside Primary Care NHS Trust, developed a scheme to support patients with medication problems referred by social services in Perth and Kinross. The runners-up, led by Harry McQuillan of Lothian Primary Care NHS Trust, established a network of community pharmacies to deliver palliative care services to patients. They covered two of three priority areas for pharmaceutical care — older people, palliative care and people with mental illness — under the model schemes which were introduced in November, 1999 (PJ, November 13, 1999, p770). The scheme is to be extended to cover cardiovascular disease, diabetes and repeat prescribing.

Alison Strath, chairman of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Scottish Executive, said: “I am delighted that our health minister’s pharmaceutical care model schemes have received such recognition. It gives the profession a sound framework within which we can develop new services to meet patients’ needs and develop ways to work together to improve patient care.”

Scotland was also successful in the hospital care section of the awards. Karen Reid and colleagues from Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust developed a performance monitoring system for clinical pharmacy.
