EducationListing pharmacy as an academic subjectFrom Dr M. Searcey I am somewhat baffled by the lack of reaction of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society to the recent coverage of pharmacy as an academic subject in the broadsheet national newspapers. In a recent survey by The Times, pharmacy was combined with pharmacology as a subject. In a recent Guardian, pharmacy and pharmacology were likewise interchangeable. Now, in The Guardian of 19 June, which contains a Guide to higher education, pharmacy has disappeared completely, with all United Kingdom pharmacy higher degree courses listed under guess what pharmacology. As a chemist working in a school of pharmacy, I am pretty convinced that the Royal Society of Chemistry would be making its voice heard by the editors of these newspapers if chemistry was being lumped in with, say, physics. What is the Society doing to make sure the subject for which it speaks is being properly represented? Mark Searcey |
