SGM

Call for review of mechanism

From Mr S. A. Wheatley, MRPharmS

At a recent meeting, the executive of Boots Pharmacists’ Association considered the circumstances of the special general meeting of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society held on 3 June. We concluded that the calling of the meeting was ill-founded, that the meeting was unnecessary and that, in the event, was best described as a shambles. Certainly it was a distraction and was convened at a cost that the Society can ill afford. It would be of considerable interest if we could be informed of the extent of that cost. We have assumed that all those attending the meeting did so at their own expense.

We acknowledge that the meeting was properly arranged within the constraints of the Society’s bye-laws. However, we note that it is reported that only a few of the members who were signatories to the request to convene the meeting actually attended. The absence of the other signatories is unacceptable and their commitment to the motions before the SGM is therefore suspect.

There is a need to ensure that there is no repetition of this unfortunate episode and there should be a review of the mechanisms by which special general meetings are called.

Stan Wheatley
Boots Pharmacists Association
