Society opens headquarters building for Lambeth Pharmacy
History Show
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society opens its doors to
the public from noon to 5pm on Saturday 14 July for a Lambeth Pharmacy
History Show. Organised as part of the local Vauxhall Festival, the programme
of free events includes hands-on demonstrations, a special exhibition,
talks and tours of the museum exhibition spaces on four floors of the
building. Many of the events will be linked to the festivals garden theme.
At 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm, a team of museum staff
and volunteers from the British Society for the History of Pharmacy will
give hands-on demonstrations of a range of Victorian dispensing skills.
Costumed apothecaries (Joanna Castle and Peter Gregory) and their colleague
the confectioner (Mandy Wynn) will offer visitors the chance to handle,
smell and taste a range of authentic 15th century raw ingredients, made-up
remedies and sweetmeats.
At 2.30pm, Michael Watts, a guide at Chelsea Physic
Garden, will give a half-hour talk on Plant medicines from your doctor,
looking at plants used in modern pharmacy. At 3.30pm, Letta Jones, lecturer
in horticulture and garden history at Birkbeck College and Chelsea Physic
Garden, will give a half-hour illustrated talk on Herb gardens ancient
and modern, in which she will discuss early botanic and physic gardens
in Britain and Europe.
A special exhibition will be devoted to Lambeths
local eye ointment factory and its pottery industry.
For visitors who wish to see the view of central
London from the roof terrace, escorted trips to the roof will run every
half hour.
Across Lambeth Road from the Society, the Museum
of Garden History and its café will also be open, from 10.30am to 5pm,
as part of the festival. The museum will will run special guided tours
at 1 and 4pm (£2.50, £2 concessions).
