New mental health institute for England
A NATIONAL institute for mental health has been created
by the Government in an initiative to promote changes and improvements
in mental health services in England.
In a press release issued on July 9, the Department
of Health said that the National Institute for Mental Health in England
(NIMHE) is intended to co-ordinate research, disseminate information,
facilitate training and develop mental health services.
The institutes first task will be to develop a
national research plan and set up a network of institutions to establish
collaboraive work. The network will be responsible for the creation of
research infrastructure to run large clinical trials, which are rare in
mental health, says the DoH.
The NIMHE will be led by Professor Louis Appleby,
national director for mental health, and will be located within the NHS
Modernisation Agency. It is intended that the core unit will be established
later this year.
